DrSmile 3D scan: How does the technology work?

The DrSmile 3D scan is used firstly to find out whether your individual tooth misalignment is a candidate for treatment with invisible aligners.

However, it also represents the basis of your future treatment plan. This is because the 3D scan can be used to plan the tooth correction step by step and in great detail.

The high-tech 3D scanner produces thousands of images of your teeth within a few minutes. These are then assembled into a 3D model.

Whereas in the past a classic dental impression with biting mass was used, the Dr Smile 3D scan is much more precise and enables even more accurate treatment planning.

Based on the 3D scan, the movement of your teeth is planned on the computer. Your individual aligners are then produced with the help of a 3D printer.

The scan itself is absolutely harmless and not associated with any pain. As soon as you decide on the treatment following the initial appointment, your custom-fit aligners can go into production.

How long does the Dr Smile 3D scan take and how does it work?

The DrSmile 3D scan takes only a few minutes. After you have been informed in detail about the tooth correction with invisible aligners, you can take a seat in the dentist’s chair.

Here you will first be given a mouth spreader to keep your mouth open during the scan. The dentist or orthodontist will first take some photos of your teeth rows.

The Dr Smile 3D scan is then created using a small handheld device. This is run along the rows of teeth. And keep doing so until all teeth have been scanned from all sides.

You can even experience the fascinating technology live on the monitor placed in front of you.

While the dentist or orthodontist repeatedly moves the hand-held device along your rows of teeth, an exact image of your dentition is gradually built up on the screen.

While the DrSmile 3D scan is being created, you must repeatedly open your mouth fully, keep it neutral or close it slightly, as instructed by the dentist or orthodontist, so that all areas are reached with the handheld device.

After only a short time, the spook is over. However, you probably won’t even notice how quickly the time passes, because you’ll be following the events on the monitor as if spellbound.

Following the Dr Smile 3D scan, your dentist or orthodontist will remove the mouth spreader and you will have taken another important step towards your dream smile.

What happens after the DrSmile 3D scan?

After the DrSmile 3D scan, the jaw, teeth and gums are checked. This is because correction with aligners is absolutely safe only for healthy dentition.

If tartar has formed in your mouth, your dentist or orthodontist will recommend that you have your teeth professionally cleaned before treatment begins.

Finally, you will have the opportunity to ask any unanswered questions and clear up any uncertainties about the treatment, the care of the dental trays and the retention.

Following the consultation, a treatment plan will be created based on the Dr Smile 3D scan, which will be sent to you by email. Here you will also find out the specific price of your treatment.

In the mail you will also find the link to a simulation of your treatment process. Here you can see even before the start of treatment how your teeth will change in the course of the correction and how they will ultimately look.

Up to this point, everything is free of charge and without obligation. Only when you confirm the treatment plan and want to start with the tooth correction, you make a binding commitment to purchase and costs will be incurred.

After confirmation, the aligners are produced individually for you in the laboratory. Afterwards, they will be conveniently sent to your home.

During treatment, you will need to take regular pictures of your teeth and upload them to the app so that DrSmile experts can overgrow the treatment process.

Can I have a DrSmile 3D scan during pregnancy?

In principle, a DrSmile 3D scan is completely harmless to health – even during pregnancy. Nevertheless, we would like to inform you that the German Dental Association recommends that only treatments for pain relief be performed during pregnancy.

How does a 3D scanner work?

A 3D scanner works much like a camera. It records information in its field of view. While a camera collects color information, a 3D scanner processes information about distances to surfaces in the field of view. The scanned object is reconstructed from the distance points obtained in this way.

How often do I need to upload photos to the DrSmile app?

In the DrSmile app, photos must be uploaded every two weeks. These enable the dentist or orthodontist to monitor the progress of treatment and provide assistance or intervene if necessary.
